About this journal

What gets covered here

Night photography is specific. The gear decisions, the exposure logic, the post-processing trade-offs - none of it translates cleanly from daytime shooting.

Northvaleon publishes articles that address those specifics directly. A piece on ISO noise is about ISO noise - not a general introduction to camera settings. A piece on star trails covers the actual maths and the stacking software, not just the aesthetic idea.

Pieces are written for photographers who already understand the basics and want to go further. Some topics appear once; others get revisited as equipment and software change. The goal is a record that stays useful over time, not a stream of content for its own sake.

Three areas this journal covers

Each area has its own set of technical constraints. Articles stay within one of these territories - no hybrid overviews.

Astrophotography

Milky Way framing, polar alignment, star trail stacking. Covers both single-shot and composite approaches with specific software notes.

Long Exposure

Light painting, traffic trails, water smoothing. Exposure duration, ND filter selection, and sensor heat noise in extended shots.

Urban Night

Mixed artificial light sources, white balance decisions, and managing high-contrast scenes in cities. Includes post-processing for colour casts.
